Covering at other prisons

Post by JCOX4 » Thu Mar 19, 2020 7:09 pm

Does anyone know if you get chances to cover or help out in other local prisons if they are short of staff or are you stuck to your own establishment?

And say 3/4 years down the road I wanted a change how easy is it to get a transfer to another prison?

Cheers

A mate of mine is a prison officer, and he says there are a few lads that do overtime at different establishments.

Pretty much all prisons run a system called text magic, if they need staff for x,y or z then they send out a messaging detailing what it’s for

You can email other prisons and ask if you can be added to their list and most will accept you.

Best, easiest and only real way to pick up overtime (or PP as it’s known)

You’ll have the opportunity for bed watch, general duties or covering constant watches (I have this Monday for 13 hours)

Always gotta factor in though travel time, having to collect baton etc from your own jail, getting put on key system for other jail and then ensuring you submit a time card for your hours (gotta do before the 10th of a month to be paid that month or it rolls into the next)

And last point is to get clearance for doing so from at least your line manager

Hope that helps

Tip... which I learnt over the years I did.

Make sure you state to your Oscar/SO that you will only be covering the bed watch.... if they say no you have to sign up for an A,just wait and eventually you'll get a call from them, that way if a bedwatch comes back you dont end up been dicked on a shit wing for the ED unless of course you want to.

And finally dont rely on PP alot of new staff did when I was in (and a few experience PP rats), this basically creates the less need for recruitment

Cheers NOS.

Thepower, thanks for the reply but I aint got a clue what this means “if a bedwatch comes back you dont end up been dicked on a shit wing for the ED unless of course you want to.
Im not asking for the extra ££ but for the experience in other jails.

Suppose we will have to wait and see how it’s explained once started, don’t think there will be any shortage of overtime at the moment

I think what’s being said is if you’re booked out on a bed watch from 8am-5pm but they discharge at midday then you probably wanna make it clear that you are going home then and not being dropped on to the nearest crap duty that needs covering

Bearguy you’re not wrong, our prison is slowly dropping people off other duties to cover main ones and the text have been going off most of the day along with announcements over the radio, I’ve picked up a 13 hour constant watch for Monday!
