What's happened since I went live . . .

Post by northorsouth » Fri Mar 06, 2020 11:19 pm

So I thought I'd do a post since going live after training . . .

It's been massively eye opening and certainly a big dive into the deep end! I had 4 days shadowing after training, this was supposed to be 2 weeks but had to be condensed due to the need for us to be operational. It mainly consisted of visiting different departments and hearing about what they do with a bit of time spent on wings or seeing other duties

I can't even recall what has happened when as there is so much every day but I'll do my best to give a few examples

I'm assigned to one of the 3 biggest wings in the prison and in the short time I've been live I have got to know a good amount of the prisoners and the officers. Daily unlocks, medication, send off to work, round up the stragglers from meds and get them back behind doors, complete a mountain of paperwork, unlock for lunch, lock up for our lunch and do it all again!

I've also been quite lucky to have duties elsewhere on numerous occasions. Working out around the workshops where the prisons go to work, having to ensure they are accounted for and paid, collecting them and escorting back to the main prison for various appointments, going to collect ones under the influence and have them return to their wings was an interesting side to this!

I've worked healthcare on one occasion, booking prisoners in, sending them up to see whichever department they are going to and booking out again. Been out on escort to the local hospital, this was a weird one for me being cuffed to a prisoner and going through their appointment with them start to finish, I quickly learned its important for both the prisoner and escort to remember its the prisoners appointment and we're merely there because we have to be but we have to offer a lot of support and advice to the prisoner!
Also its a big squeeze having 2 officers with duty belts on and a prisoner in the back of a car, also the attitude you face at the hospital from the general public is truly disgusting, so many dirty looks from people, I was left guessing if they were at us or the prisoner but it wasn't a nice experience. The hospital staff were great though!

Ive had my key workers since day one and got a good bond with most of them, go and see them weekly and been supporting one through his cat D application, one just wants a weekly catch up and chat with a cuppa, ones always asleep and not interested and another without fail tells me to f*ck off every week

Ive spent time in adjudications, collecting prisoners and searching them, taking them in and sitting behind while the hearing takes place, then taking them back out again and sorting their return to work or wing. Spent time working in the seg when adjudications had finished and seeing a massive self harm episode, one where a prisoner poured boiling water over himself, another the aftermath of cutting arteries

This week I had my first incident where I had to use C&R and get fully involved, I had no idea how I got to the end result and I was left an adrenaline fuelled mess at the end of it but it all came into practice and went well. 10 mins after that happened the same prisoner tied a ligature around his neck and was trying to hang himself so myself and the SO had to force his door open and get him down and the ligature removed

I've quickly learned never to take on more than 3-4 requests from prisoners at a time or you simply don't have time to do anything for them, in all my previous jobs I have never valued a day off as much as when mine come now and something Ive started in the last week or so is finishing work and just having 5-10 mins on my own in the car park to chill out from the day before going home. It helps to leave the day at work and not take any of it home with you

So much more has happened but this post would end up being 4-5 times as long if I had every detail down, More than happy to answer questions or discuss what's happened if anyone is interested though

Hope you're all well!

What a great post! And an eye opener. It shows how challenging the job is. And how you don’t ever know what the next shift will bring...

Soo the first C&R incident and attempted hanging immediately after left me feeling sick to be honest, was just shock of it all happening but was ok after a short while, I think he was more attention seeking rather than an attempt on his life but with the door blocked and seeing it all it felt real at the time

Staff have been great so far, gave me a bit of a ribbing for activating personal alarm over the restraint but I was too far away from a general and in the scuffle I had no chance of finding the button on my earpiece!

If they have a job or are off wing learning they all need to be accounted for in each area so you log them on the computer systems, they get a very small wage that goes towards their canteen for work and education

Forgot to mention in my first post the mini hostage situation that I had on one of my first days, wasn’t a major one but door was blocked and took some force to get the guy out, turns out they were friends and one was doing it to get moved due to debt and bullying!

You definitely learn so much more once live, training gives you the base knowledge but there’s a huge amount more that keeps coming! Biggest thing for me is the attitudes and expectations of the prisoners, obviously we’re there to take care of them and keep things secure but some really do take the p*ss!

Was on a late shift today and had my 2nd c&r incident, this one happened in a cell and there was a bucket full of water involved too, all went well, bit of a sore hand and another officer has a potential broken pinky...only major down side was getting soaked from the waist down and apparently where I was against a wall half the incident was transmitted over the radio net!

Rest of the shift in soggy trousers, boxers and socks wasn’t how I planned it but I made do!

Was nice to work the ED part of the shift and get on with my paperwork and stuff whilst the prisoners were all away. Had the office to myself and got all sorted, had to nip out for a few and give out some toilet rolls etc but generally a quiet evening after that

This all came from a prisoner pulling wires out of his kettle to attach to his vape as he didn’t have a battery...mains powered vape must seem like a good idea!!

Wow nos that’s one hell of start!

Sounds like a good start to what you will see constantly. I hope if I’m lucky pass all I need to get in, my 1st few shifts are like that! Nothing to be worried about once you’ve seen it you can deal with troubled situations.
