Have Had it With The Prison Service!!!!

Post by Amstel » Sat May 23, 2009 9:16 am

So, i used to be a landing rat at HMP Brixton and left the job to be with my now wife. Have no regrets leaving the job as i did so for the right reasons but still miss the job every day and thats why since leaving and moving up to Sheffield (and now Greater Manchester) i have been trying to get back into the job.

Trying without any success what so ever.... it's been one excuse after another, and the latest kick in the teeth has finally made my mind up.

What with the lack of vacancies for screws at the moment i decided to go another route and applied for the position of OSG at HMP Styal which is just down the road from where i live.

And the letter i received this morning.........

"It is regretted that you were not selected for interview".

Now, don't get me wrong, on no occasion have i expected to be welcomed back with open arms or to just walk into a position because i used to work a landing, but to not even get an interview for an OSG's position is quite frankly a joke.

The Prison Service can kiss my arse.... i'm done!

What makes you think you should have got an interview ?
Seeing as Styal are doing their own recruitment they have set the bar alot higher than they do for Officers in the national campaign. Then you have current economic climate.Your 'stickability' at HMP etc etc .

My oppo got the short straw and is sifting for casual OSGs at the mo. He is looking at 217 forms for 3 positions. The first 4 he read all had degrees.......................................

I'm currently writing references for friends who have been hit by the credit crunch. All have degrees and one has unsuccesfully applied for an OSG position. The job market is pretty tight right now and salaries are getting so low that the starting wage for an OSG was quite high in comparison.

This is nothing new,i served 30 years and i am very happy to have been retired out of the dust bins of life for 5 years.I have known officers to have served 20,30 and 35 years, then tried to stay on then had to go through the proccess of an interview with a Governor grade who has been in the job for 3 years. But then the Governor did have a degree in history and economics.I rest my case and God help the service i was proud to serve in.

From what was once a worthwhile career to the pits of a job that it is today, I'm surprised anyone would want to join todays Prison Service.
I retired 10 years ago, 3 years before I had to, as it was on the slippery slopes back then and I have never looked back except to be grateful that I am not serving today.

Its bad enough when prisoners call us "screws" and you wonder why you didn't even get an interview?

the prison service has never been a good career its a reasonable job [ or was ]
wages are being driven down and may cause a two tier service
i have done 30+ years now but am hoping to go part time to wind down
i dont love or hate the job and never have
IF YOU HATE IT GET OUT the job has destroyed people and made them bitter
AND it was always easier to get a southern nick than a northern nick.
FINALLY i am glad i am at the right end of my service but wish luck to the brave souls joining now
i looked up in awe at the staff who joined before our queen was on the throne [ they were all tall then ex army ]
RESPECT HAS TO BE EARNED ITS NOT A RIGHT OF RANK

I'm afraid the only way for the service is down. It is being completely destroyed at the behest of the financial crisis, but one day the politicians and the taxpayer will seriously count the cost of the appalling decisions made by the previous (and now this) government.

The ONLY reason we've not had serious unrest in jails in the past few years is because prisoners have literally been given EVERYTHING (latest is PS2's now approved in jails), whereas once upon a time too much bang up would have caused major problems, now the cons are happy to stay behind their doors and watch their tellies while they puff on their weed.

Anyone remember the old buzzword 'dynamic security'? I fear that most new staff would not know the meaning of the word let alone practise it but who can blame them they are too busy on the computer trying to get a days leave on the failed 'in-vision' system!!!!

A yes, dynamic security. Try explaining that to the two recent starters I witnessed carrying out a cell search by reading porn mags sat on the cons bed. Must be a new technique from Newbold Revel. All joking aside, that this was two new, supposedly enthusiastic staff is indicative of who we are recruiting now. Officer 2's, the future. God help us all.
