Letter requesting to return to Duty

Post by gaboo » Fri Apr 17, 2020 3:15 pm

I left the service back in 2019 having served a little over 2 years on the landings.

I recently reapplied to be a prison officer again, at a different establishment closer to home, for which i am currently going through vetting and showing as "referred for a decision"

Now, today i have received a letter from the prison service requesting ex officers to return to duty for them. Which now puts me in a very confusing position -

technically i could go back to the landings via this letter, however whilst i am doing this i would also be getting vetted to be able to work in a prison.

Also, as these are temporary positions for the most part, i could also then go straight from working the landings, to doing my POELT training and shadowing again, all potentially at the same prison.

I am very confused on where i stand with all this now. I have emailed SSCL for clarification but thought it was a unique situation to be in :slred:

Not unique everyone who has left the service quite recently I think it’s within the past year or do and passed probation will get one of these letters asking to return.

I am also rejoining another establishment and going through vetting currently, I emailed the HR women at the establishment and said don’t worry as your applying for a permanent position just disregard the letter. I see on the letter tho you can join permanently again with a priority email address.

yes not unique to me personally, but a unique situation in the sense that how often is a situation like that going to arise generally

Yeah true I did find it a bit weird, why did you have to do an Arc if only left in March 19

No idea. Not sure if it was because it was close to the 12 months cut off for returning, or if it was because I'm going to a different nick

I’m going to a different establishment but only been 4 months since I left, I’m moving so I will be closer to the new establishment a 10 min walk rather than an hour car trip. Just waiting on vetting to be done even tho nothings changed since I left.

I've received a few calls from my old nick,

Not missed every single one of em mind, not recieved a letter as of yet but I've been out the service a few years longer than you.... surely it doesn't make sense to have a returning officer go through poelt etc if only recently left.

I joined almost ten years ago but left during probation but there was a guy in my Poelt group who was rejoining, he had done about 20 years but had been out for 5 or 6 years but he had to do the full Poelt.
I seem to recall that if you had been out longer than 3 years then you would have to go through the whole process again. Obviously now we’re in unprecedented times.
I’m currently on the merit list for two prisons, I did my ARC just before the lockdown.

Luckily I’ve only been out 5 months so I can pretty much go back just vetting again and fitness test. Shared services told me if I applied again (this was before covid 19) that if I applied via the normal process I would have to do an ARC and potentially POELT again but if I sent a letter to the establishment governor that they could just reinstate me if under 1 year from leaving the service which what I am doing the the establishment is always advertising.

no impressed now. I received that letter on 17 April, so nearly 2 week ago.

Had an email from Optima health on Monday saying they had sent me the wrong health questionnaire to fill out a couple of weeks ago, and gave me another to complete, which i did straight away. And have had a phone call off them today saying they want me to do an OH appointment over the phone, on 15 may, so a little over 2 weeks.

Considering they are trying to get ex staff back as a priority this seems a little silly to me. this is apparently their first possible appointment. so annoying as never had any of this last time, but then i guess i must of been lucky then, now its just more waiting for an appointment which is not needed for some random reason

I even told them i would return tomorrow if needed and if it will help whilst my other app is going through ( i know it wouldn't be possible due to the vetting side, but i believe that should be more less completed, it was referred for a decision n then gone back to pre employment because of the above health questionnaire mix up on their part. :slRA2: :slRA2: :slRA2:

finally had an update last night, my portal has now changed to the infamous "we will be in touch soon to discuss the next stages" but no mention of the returning letter, so i have email the priority recruitment to ask about that now, as i presume i have finally passed all of the vetting so all being well they can push this through and get me back on the landings sooner rather than later, but knowing shared services they will probably make me wait and redo all of the training

Nice one gaboo :slcl: . Bet that’s a huge relief? Let us know where you stand training wise, I’d be interested to know. I read online somewhere that those who already held the Custodial Care qualification gained in POELT would not be eligible to for the new apprenticeship scheme (presumably due to not being able to attain the same/similar qualification twice?) and wondered where those who were trying to rejoin would stand training wise.
