Female officers.

Post by popeye » Fri May 06, 2011 9:56 pm

Anyone know the answer to this ? Can 2 female officers go on an escort together ?

2 females escorting a male prisoner - No.

All to do with the decency thing if needed to be searched, I think!

A female officer can rub down a male prisoner, the clossetting chain gives privacy for the call of nature or medical examination.

I would challenge anyone to say where it is written down that two females can not escort a male prisoner.

Its common sense, the escort chain would give privacy to the prisoner in the event he needed to use the toilet, but what about members of the public who might be just a bit surprised to enter a male public toilet and find a female in uniform standing before them?

Hahaha nice one. No different to a female doing a C/W really. They'd manage if it was just for one shift. Might be a problem if they handed over to another two though.
Keep calm and carry on.

I suppose it would all depend on the risk assesment wouldn't it, however I would have thought that common sense dictated at least one male officer?

In our place it's strictly not allowed. On an escort or bedwatch, there has to be at least 1 male. Maybe it's just part of my establishments LSS, I don't know, but I thought it was a nationwide thing.

What alot of nonsense! (And I am male if anybody asks). You cant full search on your own anyway, so a male and female officer on a bedwatch/escort cant do anything that 2 females cant do!

Actually, if the prisoner needs a shower, a female can not be in there with him during it and neither can we see him getting undressed to remove the clothing over the cuffs.

And, for your information, I was sent out the other day to relive a bedwatch for a couple of hours. As there was another female on it, I was made to swap with another male officer that was doing another bedwatch in the same hospital so that there would not be 2 females on the same one! :slno:

I'd have thought you could maintain decency without the need for ensuring that a man is always present! Thanks for the info though. Interesting to see sexism is alive and well in some establishments.

I don't think it necessarily just about sexism here, maybe also to do with the fact if prisoner/patient kicks off, that a male & female team may be better than a 2 female team at times. There is our personal safety to remember too. I know for a fact that there are some blokes at my prison that 2 females would def not be able to restrain all by themselves. And I certainly wouldn't want to be the one cuffed to any of them if they did!! :slwott:
