I think to gain respect is to also be respectful. An officer with an attitude of I'm in charge and your going to call me Sir/Miss/Boss is surely not in the correct role for rehabilitation. My view is that prisoners have been given their sentence by a court, it's not down to an officer to impose further punishment, or make their situation harder by making a huge deal about what they are called as long as it's not offensive.
I think as long as they are respectful and are not taking the mick out of you, then does it really matter ? I would also like to add that the actual post / vote has not been altered to include females, and therefore is this an act of respectfulness in itself towards women? :slno:

I used teachers because we are effectively rehabilitating them which could be referred to as teaching them.... right?

You’re not on first name terms with your milkman??!!

Your role is not that of a teacher! It is of a positive role model, somebody that a prisoner can look upto! As a child you didnt call a footballer Mr who ever either! What alot of the potential poelts or even probationers need to know is the role of the discipline officer is slowly eroding! The powers at be want you to be more of a role model. I would suggest you all keep this in mind when you are demanding someone call you mr ********* as this wont be the case in a lot of jails soon.

Again that is just advice you dont need to take it on if you dont wish.

I’m joking I don’t even have a milkman 😂. It’s like that here too. How weird! 🤨

I won’t be demanding anyone call me anything. But I will refer to myself as Miss until told to do so otherwise.

And you say we aren’t there to teach them... but isn’t that part of the rehabilitation process? preparing them for life outside again?

Being called Mr Blogs does not elevate you to hierarchy it is etiquette. However if you wished to be called Mr Blogs then as part of rehabilitation the offender should respect this, because lets face it they are inside due to having a lack of respect.
