Telling Prisoners your name

Post by Saffa » Fri Jul 07, 2017 1:17 pm

Hi Guys 'n Gals

When it comes to giving prisoners your name, how does it work?

I have a particularly unusual surname so I wouldn't want to be giving that out and because I don't live far from my prison, I certainly won't be letting people know that.

The prisoners need to address me so what name do I give?

You have no choice but to give prisoners your surname. If you write a report, they will be entitled to see who wrote it.

Mine is an unusual surname too... never had one problem at all.

If that is really a concern for you, walk away now.

In a previous civil service job I had quite a few people used pseudonyms, including myself. Can you use a pseudonym in the prison service?

You have to use your real surname. I only know this from a previous role within HMPS/MOJ.
It took 22 weeks from conditional offer to getting “the call”

Same as other services, you need to use your surname.
if you still have social media accounts i would recommend changing them so your surname is removed

Thank you very much.

I will be changing my social media name and ensuring it's completely private anyway.

Any of you guys give your name? How do your prisoners address you? Either first name, Gov, Mate, Homie, Sir, His Royal Keeper of The Punished?

Sounds wonderful :slsm:

I just hope they use some imagination if they choose to address me by anything other than my name.

I'm sure you can only be called something horrible so many times before it becomes boooooring :D

Being Welsh and going to an Establishment in england is going to be fun. Not that I haven't heard every sheep pun under the sun I'm sure there'll be some new ones coming my way.

Shouldn't be an issue them knowing your names, if you use social media try mixing your name up a bit or delete it

I deleted my social media accounts, just thought it was for the best. I would prefer my first name to not be used but I bet it can't be helped

Here's one of the best tips I could ever give any of you...

If you don't want prisoners to find out information about you, then don't tell that information to staff!

Prisoners have all day to listen in to your conversations, your tea room is probably cleaned by an Orderly, cell doors (even closed) aren't sound proof, standing on the landing talking to your mate gets comfortable very quickly... so when you're gassing away about your mates new child/car/house/partner/cock up etc. etc., someone will be tuning in...

What's that saying careful because even the walls have ears, loose lips sink ships I would think these old sayings would be appropriate in prison especially on the wings or anywhere in your establishments :sley: :slsh: :slcl:

Not all see services: police are only actually required to give their position rank (ie. Police Constable) and their number. They do not need to identify themselves by their surname, it is personal choice, though inevitably the offender will hear it from colleagues or see it on paperwork such as statements.
