Prison or Young Offenders?

Post by Newton91 » Fri Jan 12, 2018 8:22 am

Out of interest (if anyone has worked in both) which would you rather work in?

I’ve applied to two prisons and there’s one going at Feltham YOI but I haven’t applied for that. I’ve never fancied it but I don’t know why?

I would have liked to but didnt think of it, im due to start at brixton in April.

I think the good points is that the offenders are less hardened and easier to reach through to so the job may be more rewarding as you have a better chance of being seen as a role model. On the bad side they are generally more wild, not thinking of consequences and more hormonal so there is more trouble and I believe more attacks on staff (who do not have batons in YOI or womens)

YOI are more challenging, chances are you’re the first person who would have ever said ‘No’ to them before and they don’t like it. My establishment is 15-18.

Completely agree with you Elkins - for example watch HMYOI Aylesbury on youtube and then watch a different establishment - you will see many differences straight away!

Sorry to chime in. Did you have to wait long from passing the online tests to being able to book your fam visit at Brixton. That's where I have applied to and online it says no visits available and to keep checking.
Thanks

Hi Micjess,

the I got an email the day after passing the online tests with a form to fill out for the fam visit.
From what I see on this forum is that not everyone gets a fam visit so this might be the case. Its useful but not vital.
You should call the prison and ask to speak to a recruitment agent.
Cross your fingers you dont get the same lady as me - she was great until after we filled out the feedback form after the fam visit
then she started taking over a week to reply to email queries - which is how i found this forum because its miles more helpful.

Good luck!
