What comes first? Vetting or References

Morning all,

Was just wondering what comes first, Vetting or References. Or is there no pattern and whichever comes back quickest they deal with?

No pattern that I know of. I'm going through the process myself, the first I knew that it had all started was an email to my employer asking for a reference and then about 3 weeks later a DBS form came through the post.
