truthfully it comes down to personal opinion. the job is so much harder then what it was 2 or 3 years ago and alot of the "pro's" have changed.

job for life? well there will always be prisons BUT will they always be HMPS? will your prison be the next one to close as they build towards the model of having just a few SUPER prisons with a few locals and open prisons dotted around the place? there is too much uncertainty to say ether way. this may not be that relevant to new starters as the wage difference between hmps and private is now nil to new starters.

good pension? well this is outside the hands of HMPS, and again is subject to change as the government looks to make cuts. its NOT bad but it certainly not as good as it used to be.

pay and benefits? well the sick leave/pay and annual leave is good, that i will admit. few places will give you 6 months full pay sick and you can certainly drag out a good 7+ weeks out of the annual leave if you plan it wisely around your shift pattern. getting the time off YOU want is a different story. very difficult at Christmas, a bit better during the summer as its a wider time period. pritty good rest of the year, just depends on your needs and the make-up of staff at your prison. For someone who isn't bound to school holiday times its normally very good. for those with kids its more of a case of having to accept your going to have to work every other Christmasat a minimum, again summers not such a problem because you have a good 6-7 weeks to pick from but dont get too attached to a certain date in the year.
pay is poor. there is no ways around it. for the workload and dangers you face, its below standard. the fact its made up of different parts just gives even more uncertainty as they are conditional such as working unsocial hours.

staff/friends are spot on, thats something that despite best efforts remains, you will make some great friends and have a great laugh at times.

the cons are many. we are currently over worked, understaffed and very stressed. the prisoners have 0% sympathy for any of this and will take out any frustrations about the cracks appearing in the system on you. there is the risk of being assaulted, its always there and while its not "high" its becoming more common. the prison service is plagued with poor management and bullies which is again something that SHOULDN'T happened but does and like the prisoners they have 0% sympathy for you, you are on your own.
if you have skills/qualifications i would advise you to go elsewhere. I like many are stuck as the pay cut of starting a new job would be un-affordable. its a shame really because it could be a really good job, it has the potential to be but constant change, poor management and underfunding and staffing has ruined it. the last few months have been very though indeed.

An honest reply from Zzol.

I've been in a few more years than him, but wouldn't contradict a word he's said.

If you have specific questions, ask them and someone will reply.
