join the Prison Service as a Dog Handler ?!?

Post by Paw Signal » Fri Jan 07, 2011 9:30 pm

Hi there,

Just wondering if anyone can help me out there!!??

Can you join the Prison Service as a Dog Handler or do you have to have some kind of probation period (like the Police Force) as a Prison officer first? Im in the forces as a dog handler (both Attack and Search.) I cannot find any information about Prison Dog Handlers and what quals etc they need to have.

Many thanks for your time reading this post. Looking forward to receiving some feed back!!

To be a prison dog handler you have to:-

A, do your probation on the landings
B, kiss copious amounts of arse
C, wait for someone to die or retire

Voila!

Seriously though, I've always fancied being a patrol dog handler but I would never lower myself to do the arse kissing required to become one. There are ever decreasing numbers of dog units now so it's not the kind of job that you can just turn up at the interview for and get, you've got to be one of the boys (or girls) if you know what I mean. I doubt very much that your experience in the forces will count for diddly squat either because the two are poles apart.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Many thanks for the replies!

Not much of an arse kisser so I think I'll be re-thinking being a Dog Handler!!

I can see by a couple of peoples' Usernames on here that there are some ex-military. Would be good to get some points from them; ie how they made the transition from military to Prison Service, can you comute your pension etc.

Ive found out so much on this website so far =0)

Just to warn you i know someone who is in the service and was a dog handler and also trained dog handlers in the raf. He tried to become a dog handler but failed because he thinks they were scared of him taking there jobs in the future. It's not what you know it's who you know.
He is now a senior officer.

I get that feeling as well. I left the RAF as a PAT Dog Handler and had to show my interest and still no chance. Preference being to those that are green. Spent many a time training with DD Aand FX dogs as well as doing tracking.

Was never really given a welcome and was ignored by a senior member in my area when requesting info. Am thinking of sourcing my own dogs and going on my own, my old Sgt has his own training school.

It is I think dead mans shoes as they are also reducing the manpower etc

hi

im a prison officer 2 and when i was researching the differences between us and the other officers on the intranet i found there are certain jobs we, as officer 2's cant do and one of them was dog handler. I can only presume promotion to an officer 1 would enable us to apply for these positions.

hope this helps.

I was speaking to one of the governors a couple of days ago and we was discussing Officer two roles and the differences. He was saying that he heard along the pipeline that they are trying to push the dog handling positions to Officer Two's only.

I doubt it's true, but was great to hear the many different rumours :slwoot:

Hi,
:slst: right....let's get a few things sorted !

I am currently a dog handler (drugs) and can honestly say that most of what's been said so far is pure C**p !

Firstly, most handlers get the job based on merit....selection is based upon a competency based application followed by a competency based interview ! Being an arse kisser may get you a foot in the door so to speak but thats about all.....it can't pass the board for you !

Secondly, there is a strong possibility that the role of a dog handler will eventually be a role just for officer 2's....hopefully, this will never happen. Just my opinion, not putting officer 2's down !

If you want any more info, ask away....I'm always happy to help :slsm:
