New job - any tips?

Post by xHx » Tue May 19, 2009 10:14 pm

Hi all!
I have just got a new, part time, job in a Prison Library. I am used to library work but the Prison environment is totally new to me. Do any of you have any advice/tips/things to expect?

If it matters im a young female.

Ta!

Being 22 and female myself I would say expect the prisoners to flirt - BUT dont put up with it!! The more you let them get away with, the more they push it (I've seen this happen to a couple of members of staff who I work with). If they say ANYthing that you interpret to be in the slightest bit flirtatious/innappropriate then tell them that you dont appreciate it and that if they continue they wont be allowed into the library again.
Other than that I agree with the above, they can be very sneaky and come across as very nicey nicey, then two minutes later be totally different. Good luck.

Don't trust any of them, once you have given a little of yourself it will come back and haunt you. Stay professional, helpful but distant.

Oky doke, so helpful, polite and friendly but dont give them any real personal info?
Apparently we work closely with orderlies - i know what they are but are they any more trustworthy?

Thanks for all the tips so far!

Unless you have 3 eyes, webbed feet and a beard you will get a lot of attention being a female non-officer in a male jail. It isn't just physical looks that are problematic, it can be displaying too much of an open attitude to prisoners that can cause issues. Prisoners are in prison for a reason and you should try not to forget that. It is easier to start off harsh and then be a bit nicer than the other way round.

Here's a few personal rules that you might consider - you will make your own set up as you go along and figure out what works for you.

1 Never ever trust a prisoner.
2 Do not give out any personal information.
3 Keep conversations limited to professional topics.
4 Challenge any inappropriate comments.
5 Do not wear anything tight or low cut. Wear trousers and make sure that in summer months you have the tops of your arms covered.
6 Avoid wearing lots of make-up and jewellery too.
7 Remember rule one - despite how nice they can seem!

That said, the teachers I know working in prisons really get a lot out of the job and find it very rewarding.

Enjoy your new job :slbg:

(and don't forget rule 1)

PS. In answer to your question: Orderlies have proved to that they can conform to the system and are rewarded with extra privaleges, however they are still prisoners.

Hi there,

As Skippy says do all the above, clothes and attitude play a major part as then officers start to suspect you and all the rumours start.

Part of prison life l'm afraid we talk about staff as much as prisoners, you maybe sweet and honest but be too nice to them and be prepared to be pre-judged. Bless them.

Mind prison officers have bad rep's for other reasons so be weary of them also.

I wont be asking them home for tea and biscuits if thats what you mean! And i never really dress bimbo like anyway so im sure that wont be a problem.

Got my security talk/induction next week so looking forward to that. Thanks for all the advice so far, i shall try and remember the important bits.

Also not entirely sure if i am interpreting your inference about Prison Officers correctly but from the ones on here you seem a nice bunch!
