Anybody work in Ops/ or know much about ops

Post by Moonagedaydream »

Hey Everyone,

Seems as though I’m assigned to ops and not a wing. Anybody have any tips or advice or any general info about what an officer in ops will do?

Thanks everyone

Hi moonagedaydream.
An officer in ops will cover visits, reception, education, all aspects officers are needed that aren't on tge wings.

Ops officers have different shift patterns to wing staff. Depending on establishment.

Thanks for you reply Manc-Apollo! Have you ever worked in ops? I’m up for getting involved in whatever officer duties they want! was just surprised not to have a wing when others did :slbg: is it an interesting part if the job or is it something you wouldn’t fancy?
Cheers

I've worked in ops departments before and in the seg. Some jails have the seg in ops. I'm not 1 for ops really. I find it boring, I enjoy the hustle on the wings. I have friends who are on ops they love it, the interaction with prisoners is different, you can't build relationships with prisoners or test you people skills. Like I said though some people love it though.

Thanks for the info mate. I was thinking that perhaps it would be a little boring and I joined the service to be involved directly with inmates( not complaining though, just happy to be in the service) is it something you can have a word with my manager about? And I might get on a wing?

I have been working both on residential wings and OPS. In OPS you will be taking on duties like social/legal/family visits, education/workshop patrols, healthcare runner, gates, control room, MDT, security duties (cell searches, CCTV), external escorts. From time to time you may assisst residential staff on the wings/units.

Hello. The both jobs are fine. But in the OPS you have less regular contact with prisoners as you are mostly the runner, who collect them and escorting them from point A to B, but do you have more contacts with the members of public doing gates, visits, legals and escorts. Meanwhile on the wing you are dealing with the prisoners on regular basis and different wings/units in the same prison may be very different from each other by the type of prisoners and their numbers. I have been working in two prisons - Cat B local and Cat C FNP. And in my current prison we do not have OPS group at all. I personally find job in OPS more diverse and interesting, rather then working on the same wing all the time. But in the OPS you may have an opportunity to help on the wings (lunch, dinner, assosciation) when you are not doing visits and stuff. Ask your People Hub, there may be regular staff rotation in prison so you may request a transfer to a differen work group.

I work in ops and enjoy it much more than the time I spend on the wings. Lots more contact with colleagues and get to know the whole prison. The people I've spoke to on the wings have said they would prefer ops but in Scotland residential are on a higher wage so its down to money. If they could keep their wage n change they would. I work with someone who dropped his wage to get off the wings.
