What is more beneficial ?

Post by Bearguy »

Little question to anyone in the job.....Taff, Kingofthekippax, Londonlad.....

Do you believe it is more beneficial, financially, to be contracted to a 37 hour week and pick up overtime here and there, or say a 40 hour week with no overtime ??

Apparently in the prison I'm joining, everyone is 39 hours as standard, just what I've heard from someone I know who works there!

For me, I prefer 37hours and picking up pp on my days off and extending shifts. But I get the 39, 41 hours because that money is guaranteed. PP is not a unlimited pot of money.

If you like lots of main shifts and A shifts then 39hrs or 41hrs your hours a averaged out over an 18-20 week period not weekly. If you opt for a 37hr contract you will end up with more E an L shifts. I prefer the time rather than the 1500 quid ( I think its about that annually) you can easily make it up extending shifts.

I'm on 37 hours, I choose to extend earlies and do early starts or lunch covers to boost my hours, don't do rest day working normally adverage 5 hours pp per week. My rota is ok as we do every other weekend but half of my weekends are mains other half are an early and a late.
Financially 37 hours and pp @ £22 per hour is better than either 39 or 41 but not guaranteed like the 39/41. I'm gonna be going for a mortgage next year so will change to 41 as it's guaranteed and salary / payslips will reflect that ..
Sorry for long winded post but I'm tired just got home, watching the mighty Man City and downing San Miguel ...

Thanks for the replies fellas, I think a few people will find it very useful.

Think working 37 hours and filling a few gaps here and there sounds a good option, I imagine there is ample opportunity for overtime.

Well done Citeh 👍🏻 👏🏻

Personally I’d stay on the 37 hour week contract and do overtime. You’ll not do so many early or late shifts on 41 hours.
I’d prefer to extend my shifts when it suits me, and keep my rest days.
I think there will always be overtime going, there is at my place anyway.
