Hey

Hope you don’t mind me jumping on this! I’m not on the merit list, no but if you’re interested in a female prison (close to London) keep an eye out on Sodexo careers to for Bronzefield. I’m starting with them and I cannot fault the entire process with them. I know there’s a mixed bag about working for a private prison but I definitely wasn’t put off.

I originally wanted to work at Feltham as a youth justice worker but the reports for Feltham are really bad from their most recent inspections so female prison was my next choice.

I would definitely go public before private. The benefits of the civil service alone is enough. Though it’s always good people get the option and other opinions

I’ve found the benefits of the private service fantastic too. It’s definitely horses for courses. I tried to do some digging as to why private was considered a no no and no one really was able to explain to me. All of the info I found was really out dated too. I think for me it was purely based on the prison I wanted to apply for

Depends how long you want to do the job for I guess. The holiday allowance in the public sector seems great and the pension for these times is fantastic. Public or private a prison officer is a prison officer. I’m glad it’s going well for you.

Yes I am so with you on that. The holiday allowance is definitely one of the downfalls and civil service pension is also very very good. It’s definitely worth weighing up. I am super excited to start!

Charlotteisace - I have worked at HMP Bronzefield, and I can say you will enjoy it throughly. The prison isn’t that old so the houseblocks are nice/fresh! Great staff there and the admin/training team are on point... I would say the training team at at Bronzefield are better then public sector training team!

This is fantastic to hear. I am honestly so, so excited to start with them. It’s the prison I set my sights on in the first place. The communication has been great, the people I have dealt with are very, very good and I feel like the training schedule that was sent is super comprehensive. Just cannot wait to get cracking! :slyay:

Charlotteisace - if I remember rightly, you will do a fair bit of shadowing which really helps you prepare for when you go live!

3 of my mates are currently seniors there... so you should be ok :slwin:

Yes there is a quite a bit of shadowing which is a real relief. I have never done shift work before but I am a grafter and also I am able to adapt pretty well to being a morning person or a night owl. Really appreciate these comments as no matter how ready you feel or how much you prepare you are still going to be full of anticipation and heading into the great unknown. I really couldn’t be happier that I have got Bronzefield. The interview was really intense and i know there is criticisms about not doing role plays (like the public process) but having done both I think it’s quite easy to wing a role play but you just cannot wing a competency based interview!

Hi all. I'm starting at HMP Bronzefield in a couple of months, was just wondering how the 9 week training programme will be set up. Will it be done virtually for some parts, or will we be allowed to attend everyday. I know COVID-19 has had such an impact on training etc, so was just wondering how it can be done. Thanks in advance!
