You are taught how to restrain a prisoner in your POELT training, you will learn the techniques that enable you to do that safely. You will also realise that being small has its advantages!

The replies on this thread are quite encouraging.

My main reservation about the job is I'm not the biggest of lads, 5ft9 and 13st (okay maybe a little overweight!!), and very baby faced for 28 years old.

I do however have some great life experience, and grew up around all sorts of people from all sorts of backgrounds, good and bad, lived with family members with mental health problems etc so whilst I don't think anything can prepare you for the job, I certainly haven't lived a sheltered life.

I've applied for HMP Gartree and looking forward to the assessment day when everything calms down with C19.

You'll be fine mate. As I say, I have worked with officers built like brick Shithouses, but have also worked with officers that weigh 2 stone wringing wet. But the techniques you will learn during training will mean that size is irrelevant for most situations and I personally would be just as happy working with either aforementioned oppo.

Without sounding cheesy or corny, by far the most valuable tool / weapon we have to defend ourselves is our mouths. Youd be surprised how far just talking to someone can actually get you when in a tough situation. Obviously this wont always be the case, but more so than not in my experience
If not us, who? If not now, when?
