Is the apprenticeship optional?
In my workplace at the moment we have store managers and supervisors in training but they can also choose to do an apprenticeship on the side. When they first introduced the apprentice side if things we were all under the impression they were compulsory and any new manager and supervisors had to be apprentices, however after nearly a year it came to light you could opt out and just do the standard in house training and not bother with the NVQ.

Glad to have you joining the prison service and the forum here, there’s plenty to read up on and I’ve been keeping a diary going of my training so far if you’re interested in what to expect :slbg:

Feel free to add a little intro about yourself in the relevant header and see what else is around

Good luck with it all!

For those of you concerned about the apprenticeship, workbooks in your own time etc
We had a catch up meeting with our mentors and it’s been directed that all staff on the apprenticeship scheme get a day a month to work on books, regular sessions with Poelt mentors and your apprenticeship coaches

I think from reading above they’ve realised a lot needed to change with it and there’s even a huge difference between my group and the previous one who finished their training on Friday just gone

Hopefully you all enjoy it when you start :slbg:

Hi I due to start soon on the apprenticeship is there any chance you can fail and not get the position or maybe could I opt out or isit to late

The apprenticeship is geared up to ensure you pass it, from what my trainers have said and what we’ve seen it’s exactly the same as the POELT course but extended over a year to save on workbooks being done in the 10 weeks, to allow induction and shadowing at the prison either side of the 7.5 week training course and gives new POELTs support throughout their first year

I’ve had my doubts about it, there’s a lot of teething problems but it does seem like when it’s fully up and running it will be good. They’re proactively making changes to every course based on feedback and even the one that was running 3 weeks ahead of ours have said our course has had things changed they fed back on

Personally I wouldn’t drop out now over this!

Congrats to all on your posts, I received my offer last night and just entering vetting..... surprised to read you are going to Newbold...... I thought Stocken was a training prison so would be in house?
Hi
Have you heard anything yet about a start date? Just wondering how long the vetting takes... thanks

Hi Evie

Nice to see another person joining the forum! Perhaps give us a little intro or a bit about yourself in the intro section

When applying the service generally say allow 12 weeks for vetting to go through but it’s often quicker

Hope that helps

I was waiting for "The call" for around 3 weeks when they said it would be 7 days and decided to ring them myself to chase it up.

I did get passed around a little but finally got through and booked my training in.

Hello everyone

I’m very new to forums and still finding my way around it.
I’m on the waiting list for onley and also applied for Gartree last Friday because they have a pass campaign, thinking I might get an offer sooner from them. I’m still waiting...

I have had the call, but only to tell me they have no training slots at the moment so have to wait a couple of weeks, potentially April so just got to hang in here. Vetting was 20 days with Xmas and new year in the middle so pretty impressed with that.
