Newbold Revel 2020. HMP Stocken.
As the title suggests, I've got my start date for HMP Stocken, I'll be doing my 10 weeks at Newbold Revel and I cannot wait.
I'm currently a PCO at HMP Peterborough 1 year and 1 months so far. (Ran by Sodexo, to say I'm glad to be going to the public sector is an understatement.
I'd like to know everyone's opinions on Private establishments (Constructive conversation only, preferably from those who've actually worked in a private nick).
Also, who else will be at Newbold next year for Stocken?

I’ll be starting at NR on 3/2/20, I’m on the apprenticeship thing though so not sure if it’s all in with POELT and then splits off differently afterwards. Seems like the apprenticeship scheme has you doing other workbook stuff all year when in your home establishment which I don’t fancy the sounds of

I’m there from February 3rd....roll on !!!

I was in the first apprenticeship cohort at my prison + let me tell you.. it is the biggest load of BS.MunchyCarrot wrote: ↑Fri Nov 29, 2019 5:55 pmI’ll be starting at NR on 3/2/20, I’m on the apprenticeship thing though so not sure if it’s all in with POELT and then splits off differently afterwards. If you haven’t passed maths + English at GSCE Grade C or equivalent, you’ll be made to sit and pass it. Then you have to do a 1500 essay and a “professional” discussion.. trust me it’s a waste of time because it’s nothing like the real thing.

Doesn’t sound too good Jono, I agree that there should be qualification related rewards in regards training to be a prison officer, but shouldn’t have to jump through a million hoops to get it !

Oh no, from what I’ve read it’s not looking great. I wanted to do my POELT and get on with it. Don’t want to be wasting my free time writing essays and doing ridiculous paperwork for the sake of it. I passed my maths and English with high grades but in 1987 so I’ll have to redo them according to the emails I’ve had regarding starting

Congrats to all on your posts, I received my offer last night and just entering vetting..... surprised to read you are going to Newbold...... I thought Stocken was a training prison so would be in house?

Less than a month to go! I’m so excited to move away from the private sector and get into the public sector.
I look forward to seeing everyone there, I hope you all have a good Christmas, enjoy it because you’ll probably end up working the next few!

For those of you concerned about the apprenticeship, workbooks in your own time etc
We had a catch up meeting with our mentors and it’s been directed that all staff on the apprenticeship scheme get a day a month to work on books, regular sessions with Poelt mentors and your apprenticeship coaches
I think from reading above they’ve realised a lot needed to change with it and there’s even a huge difference between my group and the previous one who finished their training on Friday just gone
Hopefully you all enjoy it when you start
