Alone on the wing

Post by loulou1 » Sat Jan 20, 2018 7:07 pm

I am a new officer, Live just one week. I am in a private jail so i know the rules are different. However i am alone on the wing all of the time and expected to do LBB's whilst lone working. Is here some way i can find out the correct procedure without going to my manager. All other staff seem happy to be alone on the wing and it's the norm. We unlock with 2 officers and bang up with 2 too. Any help appreciated.

I think it depends by your LSS. Is it a D cat jail?

You say that other staff seem to be happy alone on the wing and it's the norm. Maybe you should ask other officers how they cope with it and if they have any good advice that might make you life easier. Good luck anyway and keep us updated

If you want my honest opinion go and find another job. Private prisons cares just for money.

You will work alone but not alone on the wing.
You need to know where your team mates are.
You need a minimum of 3 officers actively on a wing to open up.
If your the ONLY officer on a wing then retreat to a place of safety.

You cant really say that Sgt because thats your MSL not a private prisons!

As they have stated the wing is a 2 man unlock and 1 during the core day!

I must saytl tho i would be concerend that they unlock with only 2 and 1 on during a core day! Do you mean there is only one of you per landing??

If not i dont think id be walking around on my own!

Every job has to have a risk assessment done (it’s law). That includes private prisons.
There will be a risk assessment for how many staff is needed to unlock, and do other duties. Safely.

Therefore, there is a staff to prisoner ratio set out. If your employers are not letting you know this information, then they are breaking the law. There’s no two ways about it. Demand to see the risk assessments. If they say no, then report them to the MoJ/Ombudsman/local MP/POA/prisons inspectorate.

http://section44.co.uk

Also, this site is incredibly important for all employees (of every job in the country) to know. Health and safety at work is something that we all need to be aware of. The law is on our side. Use it.

I can’t even begin to stress how concerned I am about this OP’s working conditions :slnote:

I once applied for a Prison Officer role at a Private prison in London and passed the RAD but I pulled out later.

I was told only 33 officers work at one time controlling 1200 prisoners. It's far too dangerous in a Private prison. I applied at a HMP Prison and went ahead with this and I'm glad i did this.

Try and change prisons if possible.

My advice move over to hmpss public run prison I cannot believe 2 to unlock and 1 to cover wing on core day. We have 4 to unlock and an absolute minimum of 2 when cleaners are out but most of time it's 3

thanks for all the replies and advice guys. I'll look at finding out about the ratio's and risk assessments. There is supposed to be two on the wing throughout the day but due to other tasks and no staff office on wings both staff are never there. Also so i've noticed there are a lot of lazy staff who say they'll be back shortly but disappear until bang up doing god knows what.

Does this mean at my HMP prison I can expect the correct, legal minimum of staff on a wing because they abide by the laws or are some HMP prisons as bad as private ones?
