Second thoughts?

Post by JohnRayon » Sat Jan 20, 2018 10:08 am

Hi I'm looking for some honest advice

I'm currently A few weeks into my POELT and I'm realy not enjoying myself at all. I feel totally out of place, and i'm realy struggling to adapt. I'm starting to have second thoughts if this is the right career for me.
I was wondering if this is a common feeling to have at this stage. Or if maybe I should consider resigning if that's even possible at this point.

Hang in there. Do a minimum of 1 year if you don't like it and if you leave atleast you have the qualifications and and good work experience. If you leave so quick it won't look good on your CV.

The best piece of advise I can pass on came from my tutor/CM at Newbold and it was this

"I ask every single one of you. Give this job a year and if after a year you are still not happy then please please leave. As this job will mess with your head and make you very ill if you do not enjoy it . It's not a job for everyone"

Can I ask how the POELT is going for you? Is it that you are just finding it too tough, or are you not enjoying what you're doing?

Poelt can be daunting.. All new stuff to learn.
Info overload....

Give It time.
Someone on my poelt course felt the same. She is now just out of probationary period and loves the job.
But if its not for you and you've given it a good go, then leave. It will mess with your head

I felt exactly the same when I did my basic training for the military, felt lost, couldn’t adapt, doubting my ability and all what you might be feeling,26 years on I’ve just finished, when I came out of basic training it all changed, the pressure eases slightly and you find your feet, you have come this far and look at it this way,you only have weeks left at POELT ,stick it out my friend you can do it 👍👍

I've only been in my establishment for three weeks. Going live in couple of weeks. Even tho it's been such a short time I can honestly say that I've found my place to be, I've never settled in so quick into a new role. I've been listening, making notes, learning and asking a billion questions every day. And it works. I mean I've had many supportive people, almost as many as grumpy miserable ones who don't enjoy it and try to do as little as possible. But that's like anywhere else you go. You get people who motivate you but sometimes you have to motivate yourself. It's never easy at the beginning, but give it a while and you'll look back thinking of this and be grateful you didn't give up. Don't throw away this amazing opportunity, you've gone so far! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Well to be honest it is not a common feeling. Take a deep breath wait to finish your training and you’ll see when you will be live

If you don’t feel comfortable if someone will shout in your face or you are not comfortable to permanently assess the danger and try to de escalate all sorts of situations maybe is not a job for you.

Sorry guys but I’m preparing to go to work now. Speaking about how comfortable you can feel last night I had a flooded cell, relocated/ restrained a prisoner and on top an external escort for three hours. If next night you will feel comfortable to go to work then this job is definitely for you. Sorry but not coated sugar. :slbg:
