Am I too old?

Post: # 136381Post Fishface

Hi All

I am 55 and I hope to start as a Prison Officer sometime this spring/summer. I am fit, healthy and have no medical problems but am slightly concerned that I may be viewed as too old. There do seen to be quite a few people currently applying for this line of work who are in a similar position.
I'd be very interested to hear what the opinions of current Prison Officers are on this. Whether they consider this a potential problem or not. Would there still be the opportunity for advancement as for younger entrants? Would certain types of prison be more suitable than others?

Any thoughts or advice on questions like these gratefully received.

I am 45 and have just left newbold I wasn't the oldest as there was around 10 or s older than me, the oldest being 50 odd.
I felt Old amoungst the rest who were all in their twenties, however felt younger at my establishment.
I would not bother if I was 55 but of course it's up to you, you will have life experience so that's good. But think carefully ... good luck anyhow!

You'll regret it more if you don't try it.

Age is just a number and life experience is so valuable!

I'm closer to 50 than I'd like to be and I start in mid April, as peeps have already said age is just a number. Although you'll be in with 'the kids' you'll bring life experience which will serve you well on the landings. It takes alsorts to make the world go round and it takes all backgrounds, ages and experiences to keep a prison working.

Go for it, you've got nothing to lose and everything to gain... if you don't you could regret it ;)

I have just turned 50 and I will not let it put me off. Initially I was concerned but was told at RAD that with retirement age not until 67ish (female) that I still have a whole career ahead if successful. And my sex and build should not deter me either.

Depends what prison you will be working in and your level of fitness but I'm not sure I'd wanna face a 28 year old 6ft2 18 stone guy at 55 years old alone in the landing though.

All the best in what ever you do.

I wouldn't worry too much ... there's a guy who's 57 currently at newbold ... yes he's less flexible in a c and r lesson but some prisoners will refer to you as grandad ... which shows they don't see you as a threat they'd rather hit a young officer than an old 1 believe me .... Don't worry some of the most experienced officers at my jail are a tad over 50 they don't have any problems .

Age is just a number mate,in my current job I’ve worked with officers half my age and yes they are fine but life experience is a valuable asset, the young officers ive worked with tend to respect and ask the older guys for advice ,hope it’s the same in the prison service so don’t be put off and best of luck to you 👍

No definitely not to old, if I had a choice of working alongside a 21 year old graduate or 55 year old with life experience, id be going with the 55 year old.

Hi

I am over 50 and currently at Newbold.

There are differences and a lot are actually age positive if you are older.

To look at previous post... I am 6ft and 18 stone armed with experience, training and at least 2 colleagues, as a prisoner do you want to kick off with me... that door can swing both ways!!

You might have a regret.. like leaving it until now, and wonder why you didn't do it earlier.
