Wedding during POELT - refused one day off!

Post by Portsmouth97 »

Hi all - just wondering what people’s views on this situation is. I was due to get married last year but due to COVID, it didn’t go ahead. The venue called the other half to say they have one day left in 2021 and it’s ours if we want it. The other half agrees and pays a non-refundable deposit or £2k - wince!! - so I immediately email SSCL to explain the situation, ask for one day leave and promise to put in the hours to catch up on anything I’ve missed.

Yesterday at 9pm I get a call to say no. Absolutely not. If you want want to get married we will have to move your start date back three months - I’m due to start in 10 days, so I’d be left with no income for three months!

There must be provisions for people who fall ill or need compassionate leave during POELT. So I’m in a situation now where I’d lose around £5k on the wedding and three months income if I shift my start date, or start and hope they change their mind. What’s everyone’s thoughts?

I think I’m veering on the side of starting on the 10th May and contact the POA for support.

Who said you can't have it off? I would start, tell your trainers they would accommodate you as people do go sick for a day during a course.

Surely they could just put it down as a pre booked holiday? I’d contact the poelt mentor at you establishment mate.

SSCL are not helpful at all!... I’d take the job offer and tell your establishment when you get there.. they should be fine for one day off, for your own wedding !
In POELT training, we were told if someone was off for more than 2 days, they wouldn’t be able to catch up but your only asking for one day so that should be fine.
Your POELT trainers will understand I’m sure. We had a guy take a day off to attend a funeral, this was on a Friday so he only missed half a day anyway.
Monday’s is a half day, starting at 1pm and Fridays we finished at 12 pm.
Once you’ve started in the job, people will help you. We even had POELTS isolating at home for two weeks due to covid.

Once you start Poelt training you are allowed 3 days off maximum. I'm currently in my training and people have been taking days off. There's no issue you just have to ask your colleagues for the information you've missed out on.

You could quote article 12 of the human rights act... the right to marry. :slnote:

Wow, guys! Thanks so much for the boost. It’s really been helpful and put my mind at rest. Last thing I’d want is to be dismissed or get a disciplinary for getting married!

Speak to your training team, however it is in writing that no leave to be taken during POELT course, however most of the trainer's will sort something. We had a lad who's partner gave birth and he was offered 1 day off or he could back squad to the next course. You will be working towards a nationally recognised qualification that has set contact hours needed to meet the requirements.
Where are you doing your training ?

And of course good luck with the upcoming nuptials and the career.
