New Prison Officer

Post by Tarot » Wed Sep 26, 2007 9:27 pm

Hi

I have just passed everything and been offered a placement.....no major doubts or concerns...quite looking forward to the challenge....just looking for a run down of general life, shifts, teamwork, promotions, transfers to other departments, pay scales (dare I ?) and an insight into the service from anyone currently in it...Any help appreciated x

Yes they all exist and the pay is crap

Everything will be covered in your first week, and become more apparent, when you spend the week induction in you prison.
Most of the stuff you’re asking about can be picked up on the prison service website

There are a few answers to your questions here

If it's anything like our place you'll spend the first few weeks wandering around, getting lost and given tasks to do that you are expected to know.

It's a case of 'suck it and see' or should it be 'sink or swim' :)

Seriously you'll have a bloody good laugh and settle in fairly quickly.

Enjoy it, I do!

a total lack of jaffa cakes?

I worked in a prison once (HMP Wandsworth) and concluded that there are good and bad people amongst those prisoners

(and good and bad among the staff too  ) can't answer your question really as I only worked there a few days (during ye old strike of 1988)
