Re: The call start date

Tia- Regarding start dates ,they just phoned me one evening and then had a quick talk about start dates and training dates. I then received an email afterwards confirming what was said on the phone. I then had to accept the formal offer, on the email.
I’m not sure why a zoom call would be needed?...

Re: Is it possible to change home establishment before training?

Have you accepted the position on your portal? Contact Priory recruitment and ask. Before I started,Priory recruitment rang me late one evening and offered me the job, with a start date and training date. The lady then emailed me all the information afterwards. Remember that they have already made a...

Re: Unsuccessful application

You have to call SSCL and tell them you want to be on the merit list for other prisons, providing they’re recruiting. This is after passing the VRC. I’m not sure you can change your mind after applying, without doing the VRC first.

Re: Induction - Disappointed

Every prison can differ form others. At my establishment there are lots of new staff, many in their first two years. They were all friendly, but inexperienced at the same time. This can be present other challenges for other new staff. It’s true that in years gone by, the existing officers wouldn’t t...

Re: Mental health declaration

Being honest, I’d echo this advice. I’ve only been out of training a few months. I’ve seen grown men break down in tears telling me how stressed they are, people self harming in front of me, done constant watches on people wanting to kill themselves. You will deal with depressed, angry, emotional pe...

Re: Failed vetting appeal

I went through this last year. If I understand it right, once you’ve passed the ARC or VRC, you go on the merit list. Once they allocate you a place, you get an email telling you where your going and if you want to accept it or not. If you’ve applied to multiple places, you’ll get emails the same ti...

Re: Training

Kat- I think the apprenticeship scheme is starting soon , which was delayed due to covid. In that case the training schedule is different, from what I understand. However POELT training is 8 weeks. You go to a training centre, and the course in Monday- Friday. You start every Monday at 1pm and finis...

Re: Training and residential

Bit late on here but I’ll try and answer. If you’re training at Wandsworth, you’ll stay in a hotel. There is a train station near by, there is also a car park at Wandsworth but it does get pretty full quite quickly due to staff parking there. By all means, take food and drink to your hotel, whatever...

Re: Training

In training you’ll work Mon- Fri. Before you start training, and after you’ll shadow at your prison. The hours you do there will be up to your prison. As for staying away, that’s a strong possibility. It could well be that you can commute there daily, if near enough. Otherwise, you’ll stay there. SS...

Re: Unsuccessful application

Even if you apply with a different email address it sometimes recognises you have a pending application, I’m not sure how. Anyway you’ve passed the VRC, so not point doing it again! You have to call SSCL who will mirror over your results. It can take a week to do, but that’s how I did it. I then got...

Re: Wearing your officer uniform, in a pub....

It’s certainly true that some prisons had a mess with a bar in it, and that they could drink at lunchtimes..and that’s wasn’t all that long ago...times have changed! People still do go to the pub, on a lunchtime and do have a drink, of course they’re not really supposed to consume alcohol when going...

Re: What is more beneficial ?

Personally I’d stay on the 37 hour week contract and do overtime. You’ll not do so many early or late shifts on 41 hours.
I’d prefer to extend my shifts when it suits me, and keep my rest days.
I think there will always be overtime going, there is at my place anyway.
