Re: Prison Officer to OSG
Guys I’m thinking of asking to downgrade to OSG... anyone serving know if this will put my job at risk asking to downgrade? Could it effect my probation?

Re: Blood pressure
I used to be in the Armed services and passed their medical when I was younger and their tests were much more stringent! Don’t know why but in the last ten years or so, I seem to get nervous when I have my blood pressure taken. It’s when that cuff goes on and tightens, I literally get so stressed! I...

Re: Why do you think most recruits stop posting once they start their job?
Bearguy- yes I had an issue with my blood pressure, I’d not eaten much, having left to do the ARC early in the morning with no lunch, and was a bit stressed after the role plays! I’m sure I’m quite fit otherwise, but put it down to white coat syndrome. I went back three weeks later and re - took it ...

Annual Leave And Bank Holidays
Quick one guys- we get 185 hours ( 25 days) annual leave. We also get 9 days privilege leave to cater for bank holiday and public holidays.Just to be clear, this is in addition to the 25 days we get? At my jail we have to block book 4 weeks in the year, a week early winter, two weeks summer and anot...

Re: Advice For New Officer
From speaking to staff the last few weeks the best word is ‘NO’. Say you can’t do it, this goes for lots of things, from people wanting to be let out their cell to do something or get you to do something else. Obviously if it’s reasonable and it’s within your job description to do it ,then do it. Bu...

Re: Prison Officer to OSG
Good question Craig I wondered that too! Some OSGs have become Prison Officers so surely it can be the other way round too??

There are a few of us on here that still are active that are now in the job! Myself, Craig and Taff for a start!
But I agree, there are thousands of prison officers around the country and this site doesn’t seem to reflect that ...

Re: PNC/DBS checks
I’m not actually sure what the difference is. A PNC check shows all warning, cautions and convictions. A DBS check I think at enhanced level shows the same.
The prison service asks you to declare any arrests, so I’d assume they check the PNC but I’m not 100% sure.

Re: part time working
Depending on where you work depends on how many nights you do. Nights are generally quite easy to swap with if you don’t want them. However you won’t do them that often as an officer, and definitely not permanently.
There are OSGs that do permanent nights however.

I’m live now but realised my test runs out soon! No one at my prison has asked about the fitness test, do you do the tests at your actual prison ?

Re: part time working
Does anyone know the policy on flexible working or work life balance? The civil service does state how that they offer this and so do Prison officer job adverts on the website. The government website says an employee can apply after working for 26 continuous weeks. Although prison officers have a 12...

Re: Fitness test
The blood pressure thing wasn’t only me then!.. I had to redo mine because I was so anxious! I always get nervous having my blood pressure taken , honestly never bothered me before but as I got older it did !
I told the nurse I’m fit and exercise, and that I just get nervous !
